Siliguri’s Burdwan Road flyover, under construction since 2018, is expected to be inaugurated by July 15, according to Mayor Gautam Deb. The project, managed by West Bengal’s Public Works Department (PWD), has faced delays primarily due to disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors. The flyover stretches 1.124 kilometers on one of the city’s busiest roads.
The initial estimated cost of the flyover was ₹44.85 crore, which was later revised to ₹68.75 crore to accommodate increased expenses. The construction aims to reduce traffic congestion in the Burdwan Road area by providing an elevated route for vehicles, allowing smoother flow and easing ground-level traffic.
Once completed, the area beneath the flyover will be developed into a multi-use public space that includes a children’s play zone, a cafeteria, and a large parking facility. These additions are intended to improve the utility of the space and serve the community’s recreational and parking needs.
In addition to the flyover, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation plans to establish two more parking zones on Station Feeder Road and Sevoke Road. These efforts are part of a broader plan to alleviate traffic pressure across the city and improve urban infrastructure.
The flyover project is part of wider development initiatives in Siliguri, including a mega drinking water project funded by the central government’s AMRUT 2.0 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation). Mayor Gautam Deb stated, "The Burdwan Road flyover will be inaugurated by July 15. The work is in its final stage and we are trying to meet the deadline."
